Why are my Tape Hair Extensions Falling Out?
Why Are My Tape Hair Extensions Slipping?
If your tape hair extensions are slipping, falling out, or not lasting as long as expected, it is usually due to incorrect application, poor sectioning, or product build-up on the natural hair. Below are the most common causes of slipping tape-in extensions and how to prevent them.
Cause 1: Too Much Hair Sandwiched Between the Tapes
Tape wefts require a balanced amount of hair between the adhesive tabs. If the section is too thick, the tapes cannot seal together properly—they will only stick to the top layer of hair. This leads to weak bonds and extensions slipping out shortly after application.
Cause 2: Too Little Hair Sandwiched Between the Tapes
Using too small or too fine a section means the natural hair cannot support the weight of the extensions. This may cause discomfort, premature slipping, or hair breakage. The section must be strong enough to support the tape but not so thick that it prevents the tapes from sealing.
Cause 3: Sections Too Wide or Applied on Damp Hair
The hair section should always be slightly narrower than the tape tab. If it’s too wide, moisture and products can easily get behind the adhesive, weakening the hold and causing the tapes to lift or slip.
Applying tape hair extensions to damp or partially dried hair will always result in slipping. Moisture prevents the adhesive from bonding correctly, so the hair must be fully dried and smoothed before application.
Cause 4: Messy Sectioning or Misaligned Tape Tabs
Precise, clean sectioning is essential for tape-in application. If the tapes are not lined up perfectly or if they only partially stick together, they won’t secure properly. This makes the extensions harder to maintain and increases the chance of slipping due to poor brushing or washing technique.
Product Build-Up and Incorrect Hair Preparation
Always wash your client’s hair with a clarifying shampoo before fitting tape hair extensions. Clarifying removes oils, conditioners, silicone coatings, and styling product residue that prevent the adhesive from gripping the natural hair.
Heavy conditioners, serums, and masks can leave a slippery film on the hair that interferes with adhesion. Thoroughly clarifying ensures the tapes have the cleanest possible surface to bond to.
After washing, make sure the hair is fully dried and straightened. This provides a smooth, controlled canvas for sectioning and ensures maximum hold from the adhesive tape.
